How a direct sales personality quiz led to more sales, party bookings and sponsor leads in my direct selling business:
I’ve sold many, many different types of products over the years. As a salesperson, direct seller, party plan consultant, entrepreneur or business owner, I have sold products such as:
- Cold meats in my very first job as a teenager in the supermarket delicatessen
- Single roses to loved-up restaurant-dining couples in my casual job when I first moved out of home (talk about a tough gig!)
- Make-up, jewelry, books, vitamins, cleaning products, training courses, honey, skincare
- and…. GYM memberships! (these were the hardest to sell, because I was selling a product you could not see or touch; I had to sell an idea… a dream)
I had to get a lot of help and professional sales training to learn how to sell enough gym memberships to make a full-time income to be able to buy our first house. I attended many conference training days to learn new sales skills.
Our sales trainers taught us that selling any type of product was all about:
- Building a connection and finding commonality with your prospect so that they like & trust you first.
- Then you have to find out what problem they have that they are trying to solve.
- Next, you show them how your product can be the solution to their problem.
- And finally, you have to ask for the sale.
- Oh, and one more step, was to then ask for referrals so that you could get more new business…. in our direct sales party plan world, that would be the equivalent to asking party guests to book a party, so that your business continues to grow.
But let’s go back and take another look at step 1….
- Build a CONNECTION,
- Find COMMONALITY,
- Get the prospect to LIKE you,
- Get the potential new customer to TRUST you…. “HOW DO YOU DO THAT?”
My sales trainers told me that first, I had to take a PERSONALITY QUIZ!! “What? Why?”
Apparently, we needed to understand who we were first, by taking a personality quiz, so that we could then relate to our prospect and know how to engage with them in their own personality style to make them feel comfortable and to then hopefully build the ‘like & trust’ factor!

And when I started my direct selling business, it was all exactly the same! By knowing my own direct sales personality style and understanding how to identify the personality style of my party guests and hostess, I could build the ‘like & trust’ factor with my customers quickly, which led to more sales, party bookings galore and many, many new team members!
